Savong’s School

Operating details at Savong's School

Savong’s School opened in September 2005.

How many students? Today the school roll is approximately 266 primary and secondary students but varies according to the demands of the agricultural year (most local students are from farming families) and students may attend some days but not other days, according to these demands. Students are aged from 5 to 18 or more.

Location. Savong’s School is located 25 minutes East of Siem Reap, near the Rolous group of temples, Don Teav Village. By motorbike you head out from town along Highway 6, and later take a right turn onto the unsealed road that takes you to Don Teav.

Operating hours. The school operates 5 days per week, Monday to Saturday. In the afternoon the school classes run from 1:30pm to 7:00pm.

Staff. The school has 8 teachers, 1 librarian and 1 Director – Svay Savong – who liaises with volunteers and teaches on occasion.

Recognition. Students work towards certificates in languages, and these certificates are recognised by the Ministry of Education in Cambodia.

Primary Teaching. Following encouragement from the Government who recognise a nationwide shortage of primary school teachers, Savong School expanded its services in 2014 to include Grade 1 to 6 classes.

Top students. The best of the best students have a further incentive. Beginning in 2010 full university scholarships were awarded to the top performers in the senior examination. These scholarships provide fees, transport, a laptop and a monthly living allowance to support full-time study at Angkor University in Siem Reap. Currently in 2015 there are 13 students being sponsored under this scheme.

Imagine learning a totally different foreign language!

Students at Savong’s School are learning not just foreign words but a totally foreign alphabet and grammar system. They are taking on a very big challenge!
